On Tour and a Giveaway ~ Saving Ruth by Zoe Fishman

When Ruth returns home to the South for the summer after her freshman year at college, a near tragedy pushes her to uncover family truths and take a good look at the woman she wants to become.

Growing up in Alabama, all Ruth Wasserman wanted was to be a blond Baptist cheerleader. But as a curly-haired Jew with a rampant sweet tooth and a smart mouth, this was an impossible dream. Not helping the situation was her older brother, David - a soccer star whose good looks, smarts, and popularity reigned at school and at home. College provided an escape route and Ruth took it.

Now home for the summer, she’s back lifeguarding and coaching alongside David, and although the job is the same, nothing else is. She’s a prisoner of her low self-esteem and unhealthy relationship with food, David is closed off and distant in a way he’s never been before, and their parents are struggling with the reality of an empty nest. When a near drowning happens on their watch, a storm of repercussions forces Ruth and David to confront long-ignored truths about their town, their family, and themselves.

My thoughts on Saving Ruth ~~

You all should know by now that I am a sucker for a great cover. So yep, I just had to read this one. Not only is it a great cover, it's an awesome story too!

Saving Ruth is on it's book tour for TLC Book Tours this month and next. You can check out the other stops on the tour here.

And now, my thoughts ~~ I was immediately drawn into this story. The writing just flowed off of the page and into my mind. I felt very comfortable in Ruth's world right from the start. I don't really know how to describe it but it just all seemed familiar to me. Kudos to the author, Ms. Fishman!

Ruth and her brother, David are home from college for the summer. Things aren't right between the two of them and things aren't right with their parents. It seems that everyone has a secret or an issue that they are keeping from the others. Will they be able to open up to each other and get the help that they need?

Like I said, I immediately felt very comfortable in this story. I really liked Ruth and her best friends. They really were there for her when she needed support and they told it like it was, which is something good friends can do. Ruth is a good person and tries to do the right thing, even though her brother seems to be having some serious problems. She doesn't give up on him or rat him out.

Maybe one of the reasons this story seemed familiar to me is because I grew up in a small town too and the swimming pool was our major source of entertainment in the summer. The lifeguards were our heroes - Ruth loves being a lifeguard and she loves the children that are placed in her care for a good part of the day. So I love this line ~ 'We may have been called lifeguards, but really we were tan babysitters in swimsuits.' Yep, my summers were like that!

Another great line from Ruth ~ 'This is not how I wanted to behave - like a petulant child whose lollipop had been taken away. I wanted to be noble and dignified. Funny how you couldn't fight the role you were most comfortable playing when it came to family.' Boy, that is so true!

I am so glad that I read Saving Ruth ~ it is such a great story. I love Zoe's writing style so much that I immediately ordered her previous book, Balancing Acts. I am adding her to my 'must read' list of authors!

I received a copy of this book from TLC Book Tours for my honest opinion.
